In the quiet whispers of the earth, where shadows dance upon shifting sands, lies a delicate threshold between the past and the present. Here, the liminal landscape embodies a state of transition, where spaces intersect at the border of two distinct realities. Amid the obscure contours of a mountain range, a quarry, or a temple, lies a realm of ambiguity, where old structures dissolve, and where new ones have yet to form. Through an investigation on wild clay from Tapalpa and Chiquilistlán, volcanic matter from Colima, and sugarcane ash from Tala, the body of work Bare Ground in the Liminal Landscape guides viewers in a rites of passage, contemplating on the blurred boundaries between extraction and preservation. In this exploration of subtractive, repetitive, and modular forms, objects of empowerment and spiritual resistance emerge, acknowledging and honouring the process of depletion, and paying tribute to sacred landscapes under transformation. &nbsp; "Tefra," the Spanish word for Tephra, refers to material ejected from a volcanic eruption. Impounding water to generate electric power, these water infrastructures dictate the social and economic fate of downstream countries on the Mekong River. Working with various bodies of clay and a system of 12 individual modular moulds, allowing multiple configurations to form a collection of vessels and water pitchers, the performance guides participants into the process of ceramic slip casting as a medium to record and embody the imperial dominance of the dam. In doing so, it reveals the dam’s effects on altering natural phenomena such as drought, flooding and sedimentation impacting the precarious landscapes and native populations of the Mekong Delta. 12/2020PHOTOGRAPHY: Jeroen Van De Gruiter︎︎︎ Saline Roots is a salt-filtering device that pays homage to native Vietnamese Mangrove trees (Rhizophora apiculata) and their most unique ability to tolerate and extract salt through their root system. By using the process of distillation, this artificial copper tree seeks to translate the technological properties of mangroves and highlight their vital importance as a salt biofilter and as an ecosystem. The proportion of salt contained within the flask reflects the amount found during peak salinity levels in the Mekong Delta in 2020 (5g/L). The performance in four acts gradually emulates the extractive systems of river sand mining and conclusively unfolds the political tensions between two areas of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. One that is in constant flux, where displaced communities and vernacular architecture downstream are uprooted by sand mining and its effects on soil erosion, riverbank collapse, land slides and flooding. While the fixed area of the city profits from the extraction and transformation of sand, from concrete to reclaimed land and the construction of skyscrapers, incompatibly accelerating the sinking rate in the region. An Endless Riddle is a short film produced as a spatial reflection on the uncanny and alienating world behind intensive greenhouse horticulture in the Netherlands. Moving between, within and through greenhouses, the film challenges the viewer’s understanding of their position. Led from one scenario to the next, the only point of orien- tation is offered by the reoccurring utterance of a riddle.
